Heitor Villalobos (Brazil, 1887-1959)

Villalobos was born in Río de Janeiro. He studied music and violoncello at the Instituto Nacional de Música. Since he was only a teenager, he began a brilliant career as a composer.

At age 18, the music by Villalobos was well known throughout Brazil. Later on, in 1923 he went to Europe where he was acclaimed undoubtedly as a top class composer.

Due to the obvious “a vanguard” elements found in Villalobos musical language, his work have received better recognition and acclaim outside Brazil. In the United States of America and particularly in Europe, Villalobos is considered as one of the finest composers of the XX Century.

The Chôro Brasileño for guitar, while not precisely one of the most academic pieces written by Villalobos, is a clear example of the spontaneity character found in his work, with an exquisite and superb combination with the exotic and unique Brazilean folklore.

The Bachianas Brasileiras must be mentioned as some of the most important works in Villalobos repertoire. These are a set of Musical Works written for violoncello and voice.
